Dry or Damaged Hair in Need of Repair?

Whatever the reason your hair seems to have lost some of its moisture and shine; sun, chlorine, blow dryers, what you eat, flat or curling irons the list could go on and on. Here are a few helpful tips to help you at least reclaim some of the damage you have caused to your hair.

  1. Hair cut an option? Sometimes trimming off an inch or even three can help enliven your hair and give you that boost you're looking for. Truly, there is no way to repair truly damaged hair, so a trim is a great solution.
  2. Evaluate the need or reason for your hair washing. Do you shampoo every day, but maybe don't need to. Your hair needs the oils that your scalp produces to keep it moisturized, so limit your washing to every other day if possible.
  3. Look at what kind of shampoo you are using. Read the labels and look to make sure that your shampoo has some type of humectants in it (panthenol, pro-vitamin B5, papaya, mango or silicones.) If it doesn't look for another type of shampoo, for example try Graham Webb Velvet Soft Shampoo which adds moisture without weighing down your hair. Another choice is Back to Basics Coconut Mango Rich Moisture Shampoo which is also safe for color treated hair.
  4. Try combing your hair from roots to ends before bed as well, to distribute your scalp's oils through your hair.

Good luck!

What am I using now?

Another beautiful day, and it dawned on me that I never really share what I wear in my hair…so here goes, volume one of what's in my bathroom!

To clean my medium length brown locks, I currently switch daily back and forth. Don't ask me why, I do not think I would be able to provide a very solid reasoning for the switch, it would be one of those answers you give to your three year old after the 100th 'why' of the day…I just do! So, to get down to it, my two current shampoos of choice are PureOlogy PureVolume Shampoo and Biolage Cooling Mint Shampoo. I follow up the PureOlogy Shampoo with the PureOlogy Hydrate Conditioner, the Hydrating blend. After I suds up my hair with The Biolage Shampoo, I use PureOlogy Nanoworks Conditioner. I am always sure to never apply the conditioner to my roots, because my hair tends to be oily enough already. I always end my shower with a cool rinse through my hair to close up the cuticle.

I always pull the most moisture out of my hair as possible before subjecting it to the brutal blow dryer – so I use the PureOlogy Microfiber towel to do the trick, but truly and microfiber towel will do.

Before blow-drying, I apply Big Sexy Hair Root Pump Plus Mousse to the roots of a few spots on my head, between my part, on the sides and one in the back. Then I use my hands to help distribute the product evenly through the hair. It doesn't take a lot; this product does go a long way. If I want a little shine in my hair, depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going that day, I will rub a bit of the PureOlogy DryShine Styler through hair from roots to ends, a little goes a long way.

I use a round brush to help dry and style my hair. Depending on the style, I will finish with one of two products. If I have added a curl to my hair, then I spray Rusk W8less over curls to look them in, after I have let my hair cool in their curl, I run my fingers through the curl to style and then spray. If I do not add curl, and go for a more tussled, straight look I use Redken Electric Wax (which has a shine to it as well). I place a little in the tips of my fingers, rub until smooth, flip head over and then apply by rubbing hair through hands at ends.

Well, that's it. I will keep this topic for blog going when I switch things up. I have the luxury of being able to try new and use different products but definitely have my favorites!

Damp or Dry?

Ever wondered when you apply products to either damp or dry hair? We did, so after a bit of research here's what we found out:

If your product is a detangler, then you apply it to damp hair. Detanglers neutralize the pH of your hair, where water raises the pH of your hair, thus making it more difficult to comb. Spray a light amount of detangler on your locks to make it easier to comb.

If your product is in gel form, then the polymers in gel tend to attach to damp hair best and offer the most natural result when heat-activated by blow dryers.

Do you use a styling cream? Well, you're in luck, no tough decision here – you may spread styling cream over either damp or dry hair. Use styling cream on damp hair to add texture, while adding to dry hair reduces and smoothes frizz.

Mousse your product of choice, like me? The foam in mousse tends to spread better and dissolve easier when hair is wet; this is what helps to increase volume.

Wax, Pomade or Paste your finishing styling aid – then use it on dry hair to finish your style with hold or texture.
